Types of Swimming Pools

by | Nov 3, 2021

If you have been considering installing a swimming pool, there are probably plenty of questions in the air. With a big decision like purchasing a backyard swimming pool, there is far too much at stake to be uncertain. Will it fall within your budget? How much maintenance will your swimming pool need? Will the type of pool you are looking at fulfill meet your intentions? We will answer these questions and more in this guide to the types of swimming pools.

In-Ground Pools

When most of us think about swimming pools, we tend to think of a standard inground pool. Inground pools are more permanent, aesthetically pleasing than an above-ground pool but installing one is substantially more expensive. Generally, an inground pool will run at least $20,000 in 2022, so be prepared to spend for your own personal oasis.

Above Ground Pools

Above-ground pools are a cost-effective way for individuals to cool off without having to undergo a construction project in the backyard. Granted, your swimming pool will not look as nice and may need more maintenance than an inground pool, but you will be enjoying it faster and on less of a budget.

Swimming Pool Materials

After you have decided between an in-ground and above-ground pool, it’s time to look at materials. There are numerous methods to construct a swimming pool, but most start with vinyl liner, concrete, or fiberglass. Each material offers different benefits and disadvantages, including:

Concrete Pools

Concrete pools are considered the most luxurious and tend to be the most sought after but may not be the fit for everyone. With the quality and longevity of a concrete pool, you also get a hefty bill and some construction work, which may hinder your daily activities if you tend to use your backyard. On the other hand, concrete pools are higher-quality and can be custom-built to virtually any shape, giving them versatility and curb appeal.

Fiberglass Pools

Contrary to popular belief, fiberglass pools may not save you any money initially. While there is no pouring process involved in fiberglass pool installation, there is still a large construction element involved. On top of that, the actual material cost for fiberglass pools is higher than concrete, so you may pay about the same price for either. Fiberglass pools do, however, last longer without major repairs or resurfacing and may provide a smoother surface than concrete, which is appealing for many pool owners.

Vinyl Liner Pools

If you are looking for something that can be tailored to fit various shapes and sizes, a vinyl liner pool may be what you’re looking for. Typically, vinyl liner pools have a lower initial cost and reduced maintenance but require resurfacing periodically. Vinyl liners can also look inferior when compared to concrete pools or fiberglass swimming pools.

Specialty Pools & Saunas

Before you make a final decision on materials, consider other types of swimming pools and spas, which may sway your opinion. Some pools require a certain building material or may come ready to install, which only makes the decision easier. People are typically drawn to the generic swimming pool, but there is so much more to explore!

Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are a pool’s best friend and maybe yours too. With hot tubs, you can add various features such as sound, lighting, and jets to perfect your experience. Coming in concrete or fiberglass, you have plenty of options when it comes to style, shape, and size.

Infinity Pools

Infinity pools are excellent for those who enjoy swimming for exercise or practice. Infinity edge pools use an endless current to provide resistance, removing the need to stop and turn around until you are finished with your swim.

Lap Pools

Unlike traditional swimming pools, lap pools are intended for one purpose- swimming laps! This type of pool is long, narrow, and may include diving boards, based on the owner’s preferences.

Swim spas

With this type of pool, you can relax, exercise, and rehabilitate from the comfort of your home. If you have chronic aches and pains, a swim spay may be ideal for your home.

Why Install A Swimming Pool?

Purchasing a new pool is one of the best home improvement moves you can make. While you may never receive your return on investment for your swimming pool, it will provide endless enjoyment for your family and friends. With proper maintenance, you and your loved ones will be spending quality time in the sun for years to come.
