When were Swimming Pools Invented?

In 1895, the Vanderbilt estate installed one of the first residential swimming pools, and the idea spread to other well-off homes shortly after. At this point, citizens were starting to see the leisure-era of swimming pools, where more innovations and advancements would begin to constantly appear. Soon after, the first above-ground pools, the first heated swimming pools, and indoor pools would come into existence!

Fascinatingly enough, the first heated swimming pool dates back further than residential pools. In 1st Century B.C, a Roman emperor named Gaius Maecenas, who had a flair for the finer things, had the first swimming pool with heating abilities constructed.

As swimming pool construction began to spread, the first above-ground swimming pool was introduced as well. In 1907, the Racquet Club of Philadelphia marked their names in the history of swimming pools with the first above-ground pool. As you can imagine, it was a much harder task without modern vinyl and plastics to build from.

When Did Indoor Swimming Pools Come About?

In the late 1820s, England produced the first indoor swimming pool. The pool was salt water-cleaned and served a significant purpose, as it opened the door for competitive swimming events and more accessible swimming opportunities.
